2016 Child Aid Asia

ChildAid Asia – Tokyo 2016

CHIJ Kellock’s choir was delighted and honoured to receive and accept the invitation by Little Creators to participate in ChildAid Asia – Tokyo 2016. CHIJ Kellock has been supporting this biennial fund-raising concert for disadvantaged children in Japan since its inception in 2011. There was an added significance to the choir’s participation at this year ChildAid Asia – Tokyo as the choir performed at the special segment of the concert which marks the 50th Anniversary of Bilateral Relations between Singapore and Japan. The choir performed a specially arranged piece made up of 2 songs from Singapore and Japan – Bunga Sayang and Sakura. This choral piece was arranged by the choir instructor, Mr Emmanuel Qiu.

The choir also had the opportunity to visit Shakuji-Gakuen, a children’s home, and Yokohama Futaba, one of our CHIJ schools in Japan. At Shakuji-Gakuen, our students met up with the new friends they had earlier made at the concert. It was touching to see all the children having a good time playing team games, doing batik art and singing together. At Yokohama Futaba, the students from the two schools presented a choral piece each as an exchange of goodwill and friendship. The choir and Kellock staff later paid our respects at the tombstone of Mother Matilde.

The learning journey closed with a visit to the Singapore’s Embassy in Japan where we were received by Ambassador Chin and Mrs Chin. The choir presented two songs to the Ambassador and the staff as our form of appreciation for their hard work in preserving the harmonious relationship between Singapore and Japan. The students had also the opportunity to speak with Ambassador Chin and Mrs Chin to find out more about their roles and responsibilities.

The choir members had a very meaningful overseas learning experience. They have grown in their musicality and have shared their gift of music with the Japanese audience and their Japanese counterparts. Our students have truly made a difference in the lives of others, living out the teaching of Blessed Barré – The Gifts Given To You Are For Others.
